Kentucky singer on the righteous path to stardom
April 24, 10:52 PM Wrttten by Louisville Music Examiner Kevin Sedelmeier
There aren’t many singers who start their recording career at the age of 54. It’s not that 54 is old, but you don’t see too many "new artists" knocking on the door of a senior discount at Shoney’s. But then again, Joseph N. Greenfield of Wilmore, Kentucky, is not your average artist. After singing other people’s songs for over twenty years in churches and for friends, Greenfield has emerged with a dozen self-penned songs on his new CD
When Love Comes, a collection of country tunes with a gospel bent.Recently, some established country stars like Randy Travis have made the crossover from traditional country to Christian Country with favorable results. For Ohio native Greenfield, no such transition is necessary; he has intertwined the two for as long as he’s been singing. These songs have the unique quality of sounding part Sunday school sing-a-long and part Merle Haggard testimonial. Although he may not have the most traditional of country voices, he sings with an earnestness that works perfectly for these songs. It sounds like he’s smiling as he sings. When George Jones sang about battles with the bottle, he sang from the heart. When Greenfield sings of his faith, he does the same.
Encouraged to write his own songs last year, Greenfield initially refused, thinking he couldn’t pull it off. But soon afterward, out they came. Of the 21 songs he wrote since last fall, 12 make up
When Love Comes. If the six-song sampler I have listened to is indicative of the rest of the album, it should be well received. As young creative writers are advised, write what you know. That’s just what Greenfield did. He wrote the
The Wonder of His Love for his wife on their 34th anniversary. He also mentions her on the title track. It’s a very heartfelt number that has already started climbing the charts, entering the Christian Country chart this week at #74.On
From The Well of Heaven’s Hand, which also debuted this week at #86 on the Southern Gospel chart, Greenfield writes in the first person as God, a nice touch for an artist new to songwriting. Help Me To Live Again would be perfect for choirs, even a children’s choir. On the peppy, piano-driven Let the Cross Declare, he uses a nice play on words "…you hung the moon to break the darkest dark." My Strength In You Remains has a nice understated violin, and has a hint of the melody to My Old Kentucky Home in the verses. But that might just be my ears. (After all, I’m the guy who says U2’s Get On Your Boots sounds like The Escape Club’s Wild Wild West.)There is something gentile and comforting about these songs. Fans of traditional country music – the type that uses steel guitar and avoids slick studio tricks - should like this disc. Like the best country music, it’s not pretentious in the least. Greenfield is humble and doesn’t appear to be seeking stardom. He is more so a singer who is passionate about what he does and simply wants to share his songs. Now his songs are really
his songs, and his songwriting is capable enough to conjure nice images and supply formidable melodies. The intimacy of these songs seems perfect for a smaller church as opposed to a mega church arena style sanctuary. Greenfield would even be a great coffeehouse guest. His songs are personal, and their performance may favor a similar environment to breathe the way they do on these recordings. As he sings on
How a Life Goes, a song filled with wisdom yet sung looking forward, "We never know where the road leads till we take every turn in its path." Sometimes life’s path can mean it takes 54 years to find your muse. In the case of Greenfield, for fans of pure country and Christian music, the wait seems worth it.For more info: Joseph N. Greenfield will be holding a benefit concert in his hometown of Conneaut, Ohio, on Saturday May 2nd at 7 P.M. Proceeds will benefit Conneaut United Methodist churches. Yes, that's Derby Day, but if you are in Northeast Ohio, you may want to check him out.
